ANNA SAID TO HENRY, “Are you going down to roadhouse tonight?”

Henry lips protruded as his toothless gums met each other in a chewing motion. It was the look that he got when he was thinking. Anna liked it, and it made her laugh. She didn’t wait for his answer. Laughing, Anna got up from the chair and put a piece of wood on the fire.

Henry said, “I hope yer laughing about something funny. I cain’t see it, though. Hows about sharing it with the old man? I could be using a laugh as well.”

Anna was smiling. “It’s you, Henry. I am laughing on account of you being about the handsomest bootlegger I have ever seen. I just wish that you were about thirty years younger. If you were, I might’ve just made an honest man out of you.”

Fat Henry nearly blushed. He said, “I suppose you would, at that.”

Anna sat back down on the chair. She kept smiling at Henry as she said, “I put forty dollars in the coffee can on top of the ‘frigerator. I figured that since we was going out tonight, we might as well take two bags. Was that okay? Bill took them with him, but I can text him if it ain’t okay and have him bring one back.”

Henry said, “I reckon it’s fine. I am expecting more to be delivered later on today. You’ns had better be careful. I would hate to see you’ns end up hooked on crank like your Mama. Worse yet, I’d hate for yer Daddy to find out you was snorting crank. I reckon he’d shit his pants.”

Anna shook her head. “He’s do worse than that. He’s probably shit my pants. I ain’t to tell him, and you ain’t either.”

Henry looked up at the sky as if there was an invisible airplane flying over, and said, “If-in he does, he better not being finding out where you’ns got it from. I ain’t got enough friends that I can be affordin’ to lose any.”

Anna said, “Henry, I only use crank when I go out partying, the same with Bill. We don’t let anyone else know except you. I know that you love me and would never do anything to hurt me. I feel the same about you. If Daddy ever was to find out I did crank every once in a while, he sure as hell would never find out I was getting it from you.”
